Kunming Dianchi International City Wetland Park

Kunming Xiliangtang Wetland Park Project is about developing a wetland park with an aim of integrating nature conservation with tourism development and henceforth the local economic development. The project area lies in the south of rapidly developing Kunming city. Among the various environmental and urbanization issues faced by this region, a crucial issue since years has been the Dianchi Lake, which is heavily polluted and calls for an integrated water management system in the region and inculcation of the new practices and technologies into the planning and management system of regional affairs.

The Wetlands Park will embark upon nature’s ability to improve the environment quality, especially the quality of Boaxiang river water causing 9% contribution to the daily water inflow in Dianchi lake, while at the same time also provide educational and recreational benefits and embed itself into the tourism plan of the region in an integrated fashion. In this way, it will support the efforts towards improvement of the water quality of Dianchi lake and at the same time will also contribute towards developing Kunming as Special Tourist Center at national and international level.

The project intends to develop a comprehensive wetland park with functions such as education, exhibition, tourism, water management etc. In the most recent ideas, it has been perceived to portray itself as a Swiss Village, which will be an artifact of Kunming-Zurich city partnership and serve demonstration of the Swiss practices in management of environmental and tourism affairs in integrity with urban life style.

Drawn upon a holistic approach, the project concept is being furthered into schematic design and refinements. Lately in May 2010, the site with its already constructed Visitors Center was used for the Kunming Horticulture Exhibition where the project concept was exhibited and thus gained substantial attention of the governmental delegation and public as well.
